본 논문은 프룻 챈 감독의 영화 <두리안 두리안>(2000)에서 1997년 주권 반환 이후의 홍콩이, 내지(대륙)와의 관계에서 흔히 부여받는 지위인 “착취와 지배의 대상”이 아니라, 선진 자본주의 힘을 통해 주도권을 행사하거나 내지의 변화를 가져오는 세력으로 형상화되는 것에 주목한다. 이미 “북상 식민주의”라는 용어로 알려지기도 한 이 개념은 홍콩 자본주의가 내지에 미치는 영향력을 뜻한다. 이러한 관점에서 본 연구는 <두리안 두리안>에서 묘사된 내지 출신들의 남행 디아스포라의 의미를 분석하며, 홍콩 자본주의의 북진과 그 결과에 대해 챈 감독의 영화가 긍정적인 입장을 취하는 것이 아니라 잘해야 양가적 입장을 취함을 주장한다. 이러한 맥락에서 보았을 때, 홍콩으로 진출한 주인공 친옌을 “디아스포라 기업가”의 원형으로 보고 “중국인 디아스포라 기업가 신화”를 패러디했다는 펭 체아의 해석은 완전히 틀렸다고 할 수는 없을지 몰라도, 1997년 전후 홍콩의 역사적 상황을 제대로 반영하지 못한다. 당대 역사에 천착하여 읽었을 때, 이 영화는 홍콩 자본주의와 그 북상에 대한 감독의 비판적 시각을 드러낸다고 보아야 한다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 본 논문은 비평가들 사이에 논란이 된 영화의 결말을 새롭게 해석한다.
Abstract
This article is premised on the idea that Durian Durian (2000), a Hong Kong film directed by Fruit Chan, engages with the notion of the post-1997 Hong Kong often envisioned as an hegemonic agent that seeks to transform the mainland through the exercise of its advanced capitalist power, a trope that breaks with the conventional image of Hong Kong as socialist China’s object of exploitation and domination. This notion, known among Sinophone scholars as “northbound colonialism,” signifies the influence exerted by Hong Kong’s capitalism upon the mainland. This article analyzes the significance of the southbound journeys of mainland characters, arguing that such southbound diaspora testifies to the effect of the northbound capitalism of Hong Kong and also that this social phenomenon is viewed not favorably but, at best, ambivalently. Accordingly, Pheng Cheah’s view of the protagonist as a “diaspora entrepreneur” and of the film as a parody of the myth of the Chinese diaspora entrepreneur fails to accurately reflect the post-1997 history of Hong Kong, if not entirely missing the point. This study contends that the film’s ambivalence stems from the director’s critique of both Hong Kong’s capitalism and its northbound expansion, and on this basis, reinterprets the film’s controversial ending.
