Abstract

Since 1997, Hong Kong culture has entered a new historical phase, under the dual conditions of coexistence with China as a nation-state and the 50-year time limit. This study aims to identify new cultural specificities that have emerged since 1997 and to render visible the current historical conditions through them. In doing so, I argue that the political character of the “transition period” and the exceptional nature of decolonization must be reexamined. This study examines three prequel films produced in the post-handover period that garnered sufficient public and critical attention to be recognized as “cultural phenomena.” As a narrative form, the prequel foregrounds a logic of temporal regression, the discontinuity of historical time, and the coexistence—and often tension—between multiple temporalities. These formal properties work to re-narrativize the complex historical trajectory that Hong Kong continues to negotiate. Young and Dangerous: The Prequel reimagines 1989 through characters who symbolize grassroots Hong Kongers navigating a violent and uncertain era. This narrative structure employs the backstory of a popular character to examine the history of Hong Kongers, evoking a historical consciousness that resonates with a broad public audience. Infernal Affairs 2, by contrast, visualizes a contradictory and tragic past, producing a sense of historical distortion or transformation. While the prequel narratively retrofits the original story by resolving its unexplained elements, it simultaneously stages a return to a pessimistic and unresolved past. Turning Point, which depicts a moment of identity crisis and violent decision-making through its narrative, underscores that the unresolved past underlying Hong Kong’s identity confusion remains a pressing cultural issue. Across these three texts, one can discern a postcolonial historical orientation that seeks to re-narrativize the past through the lens of Hong Kong’s contested identity. In particular, this temporal orientation—marked by a fixation on the past through regression and the deferral of present and future narratives—reveals a distinctive historical sensibility in post-1997 Hong Kong.
