초등영어 파닉스 지도에서 최소대립쌍의 중요성과 활용 방안: 언어학적 관점에서

본 연구는 현행 초등영어 교과서의 파닉스 활동은 학습자들이 우리말에 없는 영어 음소들을 자국어의 유사한 소리로 인지함으로써 구별에 어려움이 있음을 충분히 고려하지 않고 영어권의 지도 방식을 거의 그대로 모방하고 있으며, 2022 개정 교육과정에서도 지도 방법적인 측면에서 학습자의 소리인지 문제를 반영할 것을 요구하는 말이 없음을 지적하고, 새로운 교과서를 제작하는 과정에서 이 문제를 반영할 것을 요구하며 이를 위해 보다 효과적인 파닉스 및 발음지도 방안을 제안하고자 한다. 우리나라에서의 영어 파닉스 지도는 발음지도를 병행할 수밖에 없다는 점에서 파닉스 지도 개념을 철자-음소 관계가 아니라 철자-음소-발음 관계 지도로 확장하고, 발음지도에서 활용하는 최소대립쌍 사용을 제안한다. 파닉스 지도에서는 철자 패턴에 초점을 맞추고 발음지도에서는 모국어의 귀로 영어의 소리를 듣는 소리인지와 발음에 초점을 맞추므로, 하나의 음소만 다르고 나머지는 모두 같은 최소대립쌍을 활용하면, 철자-음소의 관계도 잘 보여주면서 동시에 한국어에 없는 음소들을 보다 용이하게 인지하고 발음할 수 있도록 지도할 수 있고, 나아가 발음지도를 위한 추가시간이 거의 필요하지 않다는 장점이 있다. 끝으로, 파닉스를 지도할 때 필요에 따라 차용하여 쓸 수 있는 철자-음소-최소대립쌍 목록을 제시한다.
Abstract
This study points out that current phonics instructions in the schoolbooks do not put into consideration properly the learners’ difficulties in perceiving the phonemes that English has but Korean does not, and follow in large the instructional methodology used in major English speaking countries without criticism. Besides, in the 2022 Modified National Curriculum no suggestions are found to consider the sound perception issue and improve accordingly. This paper claims that the new books based on the new curriculum should put this issue into consideration. It suggests that phonics need to be newly defined as a letter-phoneme-pronunciation relationship instruction program, and utilize minimal pairs of words rather than non-minimal pairs since pronunciation teaching must be added to phonics in Korea as an EFL country. Unlike phonics instruction focusing on letter-phoneme patterns, minimal pairs used inpronunciation instruction characteristically not only make grapheme-phoneme relationships more distinct but also help learners perceive and pronounce the phonemes that do not exist in their native language more easily. Finally, a list of grapheme-phoneme-minimal pairs is offered for a more effective phonics instruction in elementary English education in Korea.
