초기 영어 학습자에게 파닉스가 차지하는 비중은 매우 높으며 2007 개정 교육과정 이후 우리나라의 초등영어 교육 현장에서도 파닉스 지도의 비중이 커지고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 2009 개정 교육과정에 의해 개발된 초등영어 3~4학년군 5종 교과서에 제시된 파닉스의 체제적 특성과 내용상의 특성을 분석하는 것이다. 본 연구에서 분석한 5종 교과서 중 1종은 3학년에서만 파닉스를 다루었고 4종은 3, 4학년에서 모두 파닉스를 다루었다. 분석의 주요 결과는 다음 세 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 파닉스가 제시된 체제적인 면에서 교과서마다 큰 차이를 보였다. 특히 대부분의 교과서에서 알파벳 지도를 마무리하는 단원 직후에 파닉스를 제시하기 시작하기 때문에 파닉스 제시 시기 및 방식에서 큰 차이를 보였다. 둘째, 파닉스의 유형(type) 및 단어(token) 수에 있어서도 교과서마다 차이가 컸다. 단원별로 하나의 파니스 유형을 제시하는 것이초기 학습자에게 적절하지만(Morrow, 2009), 두 개의 유형을 제시하는 교과서도 있었다. 전체적으로 파닉스 유형의 수는 19~31개, 단어의 수는 53~78개로 차이가 컸다. 셋째, 파닉스 제시순서에 있어서도 교과서마다 큰 차이를 보였다. 자음군(consonant cluster)과 자음 이중음자(consonant digraph)는 대부분의 교과서에 다루지 않았지만 1종 교과서에서는 자세히 다루고있었으며, 모음의 경우에도 대부분의 교과서가 단모음(short vowel)만을 다루었지만, 1종의 교과서에서는 장모음(long vowel)과 이중모음(diphthong)도 다루었다. 이처럼 5종 교과서는 파닉스 제시의 체제나 내용에 있어 큰 차이를 보였다. 파닉스의 중요성을 고려하면 검정 교과서에서 파닉스의 난이도를 어느 정도 통일할 필요가 있어 보인다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze phonics in 3rd and 4th grade English textbooks developed according to the 2009 Revised National Curriculum. The five textbooks were compared in terms of the organization and the contents of phonics. The major findings of current study are as follows. First, phonics was presented in different ways in each textbook. The first lessons where the alphabet is taught were quite different so that the total number of lessons where phonics was provided was varied. Names of phonics activities were similar, but the ways of teaching phonics were diverse depending on the textbook. Second, in terms of the number of phonics types and tokens, the five textbooks varied a great deal. Although providing one phonics type at a time is appropriate to young learners (Morrow, 2009), some textbooks presented two phonics types at once. It was also found that the numbers of phonics types ranged from 19 to 31 and the numbers of phonics tokens ranged from 53 to 78. Third, presenting order of phonics varied, too. Consonant clusters and consonant digraphs were not provided in four textbooks, although one textbook presented them in detail. In the case of vowels, short vowels were provided in all the textbooks, but long vowels and vowel digraphs were provided in only one textbook. In sum, the five textbooks were very different in terms of the organization and the content of phonics. Therefore, it is necessary that the degree of difficulty in phonics be standardized in new textbooks.
