Abstract

The purposes of this study are to develop a measurement for ideological congruence between the representative and the voters in his or her constituency(hereafter the ideological congruence) as well as to analyze its effects on electoral politics in Korea. It is the conventional wisdom in representative democracy that the ideological congruence is closer, it is a good sign regarding democratic representation and responsiveness. In spite of this conventional wisdom, it has not properly analyzed the relationship or its effects regarding the ideological congruence because it is difficult to get the data in the constituency level. Futhermore, it has not been interested in the academic sphere in Korea. In this vein, this study try to make a measure for ideological congruence utilizing the survey data for the representatives and voters as well as the aggregate data for electoral outcomes in the constituency level. In addition, this study analyzes the effects whether the ideological congruence influences the electoral outcomes like the renomination or the reelection. The statistical results of this study reveal that the ideological congruence is an important factor influencing in the electoral politics in Korea.
