Abstract
This paper examines how faithful to their ideology Korean voters have been in recent Korean elections; they are the local election of 2006, the presidential election of 2007, the general election of 2008, and the local election of 2010. We used the panel studies surveyed by the East Asia Institute-SBS-JoongAng Daily Election Studies Team. We find that a vast majority of Korean voters were very clear about ideology positions of political parties(or candidates) as well as their positions, and voted for the party or the candidate whose ideology position is closest to theirs. The fraction of voters who voted for the party or the candidate whose ideology position is closest to theirs is increasing over time; the ratio of voters who voted faithfully to his/her ideology is 52.6% in 2006, 55.8% in 2007, 64.9% in 2009, and 70.1% in 2010. The degree of ideology-faithfulness does not significantly differ across genders, education levels, income levels, and religions, but differ across age groups and ideology groups. The more aged and the more conservative is a voter, the higher the degree of ideology-faithfulness he/she has.
