본 연구는 OTT(Over-The-Top) 플랫폼의 부상과 함께 새롭게 등장한 시네마틱 드라마(Cinematic Drama) 의 개념을 규명하고, 그 영화적 특성과 서사 전략을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 특히 넷플릭스 오리지널 시리즈 <오징어 게임 1>을 중심으로, 시네마틱 드라마가 전통적인 TV 드라마와 어떻게 차별화되며 영화적 미학을 어떻게 수용·확장하고 있는지를 고찰한다. <오징어 게임 1>은 TV 드라마의 외형을 지니면서도 미장센, 세트 디자인과 공 간의 구성, 상징성과 장르의 혼성, 그리고 서사구조 등에서 영화의 문법을 적극적으로 차용함으로써 시네마틱 드 라마로 자리매김하였다. 본 논문은 시네마틱 드라마라는 용어가 지칭하는 범주를 이론적으로 정립하고, OTT 플랫 폼이 제공하는 기술적, 산업적 환경이 이 장르의 형성과 진화에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 분석한다. 또한 <오징어 게임 1>의 사례 분석을 통해, 시네마틱 드라마가 OTT 시대의 콘텐츠 생태계에서 영화와 드라마의 경계를 넘나들 며 어떤 미학적·서사적 확장을 이루고 있는지를 조명한다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 시청각 미디어 환경의 변화 속에 서 새롭게 부상하는 OTT 시네마틱 드라마의 서사 양식과 영상 미학의 흐름을 이해하는 데 기여하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study aims to define the emerging concept of the cinematic drama that has arisen alongside the expansion of Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms, and to analyze its cinematic aesthetics and narrative strategies. Focusing on the Netflix original series Squid Game Season 1, the research examines how cin- ematic dramas differentiate themselves from traditional television dramas and how they adopt and ex- pand cinematic language. Although Squid Game appears to be a TV drama in format, it actively in- corporates cinematic elements such as mise-en-scène, set design, spatial composition, symbolism, genre hybrid, and narrative structure—thereby establishing itself as a representative cinematic drama. This pa- per theoretically delineates the scope of the term “cinematic drama” and investigates how the techno- logical and industrial environments provided by OTT platforms have contributed to the formation and evolution of this genre. Through a case study of Squid Game Season 1, the study highlights how cine- matic dramas traverse the boundaries between film and television, achieving both aesthetic and narra- tive expansion in the OTT era. Ultimately, this research seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the narrative forms and visual aesthetics emerging within the evolving audiovisual media landscape.
