Abstract
This study analyzes the process of Netflix’s entry into Korea as a global streaming platform, focusing on the transformation of content distribution structures during the digital transition and the consequent restructuring of local content. Specifically, by tracing Netflix’s collaborations beginning with Okja, followed by the original series strategy represented by Kingdom and Sweet Home, and leading to global hits such as Squid Game, The Glory, and When Life Gives You Tangerines, the study examines how the Korean television drama industry has shifted toward a platform-centric system of production and distribution. In this process, Netflix has reorganized Korean content into a strategic asset that embodies both global universality and local identity. It utilizes its integrated production system known as ‘studio engineering’ and its algorithm-based consumption structure. However, this platform-centric structure has also been criticized for inducing dependency, particularly in terms of modes of expression, the rights of production companies and creators, and the ownership of intellectual property. By analyzing these dual aspects, the study discusses how the Korean content industry might build a future ecosystem that balances global distribution with autonomous content production.
