Abstract

This study analyzed fraction addition and subtraction problems presented in one national and three authorized mathematics textbooks developed under the 2015 revised national curriculum. The analysis focused on two dimensions: horizontal features (such as the sequencing of units and instructional flow) and vertical features (including contextual features and cognitive domains). Results revealed that unit sequencing varied among textbooks for common denominators, while uncommon denominator fractions often included expanded instructional periods. Contextual features showed that symbolic problems were most frequent in the case of common denominators, whereas different contextual types dominated across textbooks for uncommon denominators. Furthermore, the distribution of cognitive domains (knowing, applying, and reasoning) was generally balanced, though their proportions varied by publisher. Based on these findings, implications for improving textbook development and instructional design are discussed.
