Abstract
This study analyzed the impact of ownership concentration by firm size on firm profitability using a panel regression model and a threshold effect model, with listed companies on the Korean Stock Exchange from 2011 to 2023 as the sample. The analysis results showed that there is a linear and inverted U-shaped non-linear relationship between OWC and firm profitability in the total sample, which is consistent with the convergence of interest hypothesis and the interest expropriation hypothesis. Analyzing the results of ownership concentration's impact on profitability by firm size reveals that in large-scale enterprises, ownership concentration exerts a negative (-) influence on corporate profitability. Large firms typically exhibit high ownership concentration, and according to the expropriation hypothesis, excessive concentration can easily lead to the expropriation of minority shareholders' interests, operational inefficiencies, and a decline in management effectiveness. In contrast, for medium and small-sized enterprises, OWC has a positive (+) impact on corporate profitability, which is consistent with the alignment hypothesis. Furthermore, the analysis distinguishing between the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets shows that ownership concentration has a negative (-) effect on corporate profitability in the KOSPI market. KOSPI is dominated by large-scale, stability-oriented enterprises, most of which have high debt structures. Thus, higher ownership concentration may increase risks associated with debt utilization, potentially leading to a decline in ROE. Conversely, ownership concentration has a positive (+) impact in the KOSDAQ market. KOSDAQ primarily includes medium-sized, small-sized, and venture enterprises, which have lower debt levels, making asset utilization efficiency critical. Higher ownership concentration enables focused investment of assets in profitable areas, thereby boosting profitability.
