이 논문은 존 어리가 중심이 되어 제기한 모빌리티 패러다임으로의 전환을 적극 수용하면서 재해석하는 시도다. 모빌리티 패러다임은 정보통신기술의 발전을 토대로 한 기술적 조건의 변화와 과학적 지식의 축적에 따른 근대적 과학의 확실성이 더 이상 지탱되기 어려운 지적 조건을 배경으로 출현했다. 여기에 더해 기후위기와 팬데믹은 근대적 과학 패러다임에 결정타를 가하는 사건이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 맥락에서 인간은 더 이상 세상의 중심이 아니게 되었다. 인간, 동물, 사물은 복잡한 관계망으로 서로에게 영향을 주면서 동시에 영향받는 흔적으로 인식되기 시작했다. 이러한 이론적 전회는 사물 중심, 또는 객체지향이라는 새로운 연구 의제가 힘을 얻도록 했다. 신유물론이나 포스트-휴머니즘으로 불리는 연구 경향은 관계들 사이의 일시적인 위치들을 네트워크로 묘사하는 것에 초점을 맞추기 시작했다. 하지만 객체지향과 사물 중심으로만 파악하는 것은 모빌리티 패러다임이 담고 있는 근대성 비판의 일부일 뿐이다. 이 논문은 모빌리티 패러다임을 (비판적) 실재론적으로 해석하여, 포스트-휴머니즘과 신유물론이 누락시킨 인간의 역할을 다시 복권해야 한다고 주장한다. 그러나 여기서 말하는 인간의 역할은 근대적 인간중심주의와 거리를 둔다. 기후위기와 팬데믹 시대 인간역량의 새로운 단계는 인간을 예외적 존재가 아니라 동물-사물과의 관계로만 있을 수 있는 존재로 인식한다. 이러한 입장이 비-환원론적 자연주의다. 신체적 한계와 자연의 한계를 깨달은 21세기의 인간이 어떻게 기후위기와 팬데믹의 거대한 도전에 맞설 수 있을지의 질문은 다시 한번 휴머니즘에 주목하게 한다.
Abstract
This paper is an attempt to positively appreciate a shift to mobility paradigm suggested by John Urry and others, and then to reinterpret it. Mobility paradigm has been developing from the technical condition of information technology, and the intellectual condition in which it is impossible to keep the certainty of modern scientific knowledge. In addition, it were climate change and pandemic that undermined the faith of modern paradigm of science. In this context, the human is not the center of the world. Humans, animals, and things began to be recognized as the traces of both effecting and being effected through complex networks. This theoretical turn is galvanizing thing-oriented or object-oriented research agenda. The research tendencies called new materialism or post-humanism are focusing on describing temporal positions between interdependent complex relations. It is, however, a merely part of the critique of modernity driven by the mobility paradigm. This paper would argue that the human capacities, which was forgotten by post-humanism and new materialism, must be reinserted into the philosophical and sociological debate through the (critical) realist interpretation. Concerning this interpretation it is crucial to distinguish the reinserted human capapcities from the modern version of it. It is not anthropocentric anymore. In the era of climate change and pandemic, a new phase of human capacities cannot see the human as the exceptional being on the planet but does recognize as the beings that only exist through relations with animals and things. It is non-reductionist naturalism. How the human being in 21st century who realized its bodily and natural limits could cope with the great challenges such as climate change and pandemic makes us pay attention to humanism again but in a quite different way.
