이 글은 ‘신유물론’이 표방하는 ‘새로움’이라는 기호가 기존의 ‘인간중심주의’ 철학적 사유 패러다임과 명확한 전선을 긋고 있다는 점을 고려하여, 이들이 주장하듯 헤겔과 맑스를 정점으로 하는 근대 철학 사유를 ‘인간중심주의’라는 포괄적 구호 아래 분류하는 것이 적절한지를 고찰한다. 이 논의는 신유물론의 주요 개념 가운데 하나인 ‘평평한 존재론’(flat ontology)을 통해 인간 주체의 지위를 재평가하는 신유물론의 존재론과 관련된다. 이 글은 인간 존재의 ‘인식론적‧존재론적’ 지위를 재옹호하며, 신유물론이 비판하는 ‘상관주의’를 벗어날 수 없음을 주장한다(2). 이 글 3장은 신유물론의 생태 담론에 관계한다. 신유물론의 생태담론의 출발점은 데카르트적 이분법의 해체 또는 근대 인간중심주의의 극복이다. 그러나 ‘인류’를 21세기 재난의 근본 원인으로 지목하는 것은, 자본주의적 메커니즘이 자연을 착취해온 역사를 간과하는 문제를 안고 있다. 이 문제의식을 바탕으로, 신유물론의 인간중심주의 비판과 인류세 담론의 관계를 조명한다. 이 글의 4장은 인간과 비인간의 ‘혼종성’, 즉 기술적 존재자들과 인간의 관계를 논한다. 이러한 기술적 객체들이 인간의 노동과 맺고 있는 관계성 분석을 통해, 신유물론자들이 네트워크 속에서 인간을 비-사물적 행위자로 규정하는 방식의 적절성을 검토한다. 5장은 신유물론에 제기된 비판을 우리가 필요로 하는 ‘인간상’(Menschenbild)의 재설계 요청으로 요약한다.
Abstract
This paper examines critically whether it is appropriate to categorize the modern philosophical tradition, culminating in Hegel and Marx, under the broad framework of “anthropocentrism”, as advocated by proponents of “new materialism”, which draws a clearly distinction from the existing anthropocentric philosophical paradigm. This discussion is related to new materialism’s ontology, which reevaluates the status of the human subject through its key concept of “flat ontology”. The paper defends the “epistemological and ontological” status of human existence, asserting that new materialism cannot escape the “correlationism” that it is related to critically. Chapter 3 in this paper addresses the ecological discourse of new materialism, where new materialism argues that modern anthropocentrism has led to the current ecological crisis. However, pointing to “humanity” as the root cause of 21st-century global disasters neglects the historical process of capitalism’s exploitation of nature and human. This chapter sheds light on the relationship between new materialism’s critique of anthropocentrism and its engagement with the anthropocene discourse. Chapter 4 discusses the hybridity between humans and non-humans, focusing on the relationship between technological beings and human labor. The analysis of how these technological objects interact with human labor is crucial, and the chapter questions whether new materialism’s positioning of humans as non-material agents within networks is appropriate. Chapter 5 synthesizes the critiques of new materialism into a call for the reconstruction of the conception of humanity (Menschenbild). Neither modern anthropocentrism nor a return to materiality offers the ultimate truth of the subject-object relationship. The essential task is how to dismantle and reconstruct this relationship. The final question revolves around the reconstruction of humanity, which, as both a material and non-material being, continuously refuses to live merely as a material entity.
