Abstract

In this article, we discussed the formation of historical attractions in Pyongyang. Pyongyang was a place where envoys stayed because it was located on the transportation route to envoys, and especially because envoys from the Ming Dynasty were in a superior position to be entertained by Joseon officials, attractions were formed around them. Not only Ming envoys but also Joseon envoys to China stayed in Pyongyang, and they were also high-ranking officials. Based on the fact that outside visitors were constantly visiting Pyongyang and they were in a position of receiving entertainment, this article classified outside visitors into three categories according to Pyongyang-related poems and prose. In this article, it was divided into from the early Joseon Dynasty to the Imjin War and the Manchu Invasion, and from the post-war period to the late Joseon Dynasty. Referring to the town chronicles, the poems of the envoys of the Ming Dynasty contained in the Hwanghwajip(a collection of poems by Chinese envoys) are important in the previous period, and in the later period, the other records written by the Joseon envoy and another records of people who came to Pyongyang personally can be used. The three types of visitors classified in this article are Ming envoys, Joseon envoys, and other Joseon people. The place where envoys from the Ming Dynasty who came to the early Joseon Dynasty showed interest in Pyongyang was the ruins related to Ki Tse(箕子). The Ji zi shrine, Ki Tse tomb, and rice fields of the Ki Tse era were also targeted. Ming envoys were interested in the existence of Chinese Ki Tse, but they were superior in status and emerged as a symbol of Chinese civilization, making Ki Tse much more realistic powerful than those of King Dongmyeong of Goguryeo. Since the central government dismissed Pyeongan-do as a place without civilization, they connected leducation space such as rice fields of the Ki Tse era(Outer castle) and Inhyeonseowon to emphasize that Pyongyang is the the cradle of civilization and that it was still a place devoted to learning in the influence of edification. When Joseon envoys came to Pyongyang, the places they visited included Inhyeonseowon Confucian Academy along with other attractions, and the desire to show Pyongyang as a special place led to an attempt to create a story by combining famous people and heroic stories with specific places, especially related to the war. Ordinary visitors wrote what they heard in Pyongyang in their travel records, which were stories created by Pyongyang locals to enhance Pyongyang's status.
