Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to attempt the meeting of Adorno’s thought of femininity and ecofeminism on the basis of recognition that ecological problems caused by the coupling of technological civilization and patriarchal system has made historically woman’s life worse and worse. This essay tries to disclose an ideological regulation of the male-dominated society inherent in the concept of ‘nature-woman’ formed in the history of dominating nature through feministic reading on Adorno’s analysis of the Odyssey myth. In this dichotomous epistemology, women are connected with the concept of nature, men are connected with the concept of freedom, and women are recognized as being responsible for the reproduction of society, just like nature, which is just a mechanical substance .In a similar context, Adorno sees that as a non-independent existence which women conform to patriarchal culture has pictures of nature. However, in the perspective of Adorno’s non-identity thought, Siren, Circe, Penelope in the myth are not non-subjective women like dominated nature, but subjective women to keep their own identity and get out of standardized femininity defined by patriarchal society. Adorno’s reading of myths not only reflects the ecofeminist view of overcoming the concept of femininity constrained by the ideology of technological and capitalism, but it also implies discourse of feminity of ‘difference’ distinct from female essentialism. Cindy Sherman’s work, which is seen through Adorno’s aesthetic mimesis, criticizes the definition of femininity defined as ‘nature-woman’ in male-centered society and can be interpreted as femininity of ‘difference.’
