Abstract

Ecofeminism posits that the unjust domination of women by men isconnected to unjust domination of nature by humans, both driven bythe logic of domination. Therefore, ecofeminists aim to dismantle thislogic of domination that allows for the dual oppression of interconnectedwomen and nature. As a family resemblance theory characterized,a core principle that runs through ecofeminism is the“women-nature connection”. Therefore, even though ecofeminists mayengage in various differentiated movements, the concept of the women-nature connection must be used coherently. This paper focuses onthis and examines the following three ethical issues: First, it classifiesecofeminism into four categories based on the understanding of thewomen-nature connection and argues for the introduction of the conceptof intersectionality into this theory. Second, it examines Janet Biehl’scritique that the diversity and inclusivity of ecofeminism make this theoreticalframework confusing and irrational, discusses the validity of hercritique, and suggests that the incorporation of inclusivity, intersectionality,and a holistic approach could establish a more flexible and expandedtheoretical foundation for ecofeminism. Third, it argues that ifecofeminism does not present a priority to resolve conflicts when thetwo goals of women’s liberation and the resolution of environmentaldestruction conflict, it could be criticized as an implicit anthropocentric theory, and thus calls for theoretical reinforcement. Despite the needfor such theoretical supplements, ecofeminism is an inspiring theorythat begins with praxis and moves towards theorization, offering hopethat it can contribute to making this world a better place.
