오늘날 우리가 별다른 생각 없이 먹고 하는 행위는 많은 윤리적 쟁점들을 만들어 낸다. 특히 식량증산과 경제적 효율이라는 미명하에 도입된 산업형 영농은 풍요로운 먹을거리 생산이라는 결과를 가져왔지만 해결한 만큼의 또 다른 많은 문제들을 제기한다. 이를테면 우리가 아무 생각 없이 먹을거리를 생산하고, 유통하고, 소비하고, 가공 조리하고, 폐기하는 행위는 우리 자신은 물론 우리의 도덕 공동체의 다른 구성원들에게 건강적이고, 생태적이고, 사회적인 차원에서 긍정적으로든 부정적으로든 상당한 영향을 미치고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이와 관련한 음식윤리의 몇 가지 주요 쟁점들과 그것의 실천 상의 문제점들을 살펴보고자 한다. 그러기 위해서 먼저 우리가 먹는 것이 왜 윤리적 문제가 되고 무엇이 윤리적 문제인지를 살핀다. 그러고 나서 음식과 관련된 윤리적 실천의 목표로서의 지속가능성과 그것의 실천의 문제를 음식윤리의 몇 가지 주요 쟁점들인 공장식 사육과 채식주의 그리고 유기농업과 같은 생산 및 소비와 관련된 쟁점들을 통해 비판적으로 검토한다. 그리고 끝으로는 그 실천상의 문제들을 해결하기 위한 가능성을 환경 덕 윤리의 논의를 중심으로 모색해 본다.
Abstract
These days, our inconsiderate diet has generated many ethical issues. In particular, under the cloak of increasing food production or economic efficiency an industrial-type agriculture was introduced. As a result, it brought in abundant food production, but it also came with many problems while it solves some problems. For example, our actions such as producing, consuming, processing, and disposing food are both positively and negatively affecting other members of our moral community as well as ourselves in many dimensions- healthy, ecological and social. Therefore, in this paper, I examine some major ethical issues in their practices and consequent problems. For this purpose, firstly, I examine why and how eating morally matters. Secondly, after considering the sustainability of our ethical goal that involves eating, then I critically examine problems of its practice in relation to factory farming, vegetarianism and organic farming. Then, finally, I explore the possibility of solving the problems on its practice by looking into the discussion of environmental virtue ethics.
