Abstract

This study examines the concept of affect by focusing on the concept of affect-phrase in Jean-François Lyotard's later work, Le Différend. Prior research on Lyotard's notion of affect is still insufficient, and this study seeks to differentiate itself from existing discussions by analyzing the layers of pre-linguistic affect and silence based on his thinking. However, because Lyotard does not provide sufficient explicit descriptions of the concept of affect, interpretation requires the researcher's interpretation, which may present certain limitations. Nevertheless, I believe his thought still provides a meaningful theoretical foundation for considering the concept of affect. The main argument of this study is that affect resides within phrases and operates in the form of silence. Lyotard, using historical disasters like the Holocaust, events that cannot be expressed in words but cannot be testified to, demonstrated the limitations of linguistic representation and the potential for silent testimony to provide answers. Silent testimony is an affect-phrase that arises from the gaps in the links between phrases, revealing the potential for affect. He also discussed the point at which unspoken affect can lead to a single expression. He pointed out that the affect Lyotard refers to can be a state of emotional unrest at a point beyond words, a stage before being realized in language. He also pointed out that the presence of affect is perceived, but it is difficult to express it clearly in language. To address this discussion, this study analyzed phrase theory, silent testimony, and the structure of affect-phrase. Furthermore, through visual art examples, it specifically examined how affect manifests as a nonverbal form of signal.
