Abstract
This paper analyzes Michael Snow’s structural film, Wavelength, through the lens of Giorgio Agamben’s theory of biopolitics. According to him, while these apparatuses produce political and legal subjects, they also reduce individuals to conforming agents who serve the normative demands of such systems. This study examines how Wavelength resists cinematic language as apparatus, activating the viewer’s bodily perception and cultural imagination. Through its mechanical camera gaze, prolonged zoom, seemingly meaningless events, fragmented sound, and the materiality of light and color, the film places viewers in an extremely passive state. Yet paradoxically, it is through this destabilization that viewers experience the dismantling of cinematic conventions. The film disrupts narrative hierarchy, collapsing distinctions between human and nonhuman elements, and even rendering human actors as objects within the frame. However, The final scene exposes the coercive force of the mechanical zoom and evokes a primal illusion of depth, which, by activating the audience’s cultural memory and interpretive faculties, underscores the limits of Agamben’s theory that effaces the historicity and sensuousness of the body.
