Abstract
The rapid development of science and technology has caused important socio-economic changes. These changes are seen as an opportunity for some, but regarded as a threat for others. Then, which factors affect people’s positive or negative attitudes towards technological change and innovation? The aim of this paper is to reveal whether experiences of income or employment instability have a negative impact on individuals’ forecast of the future. For the analysis, we use the survey data on 774 Koreans aged 19 to 69 in 2018. The result shows that people without experiencing income or employment instability tend to have a positive prediction for the impact of technological change on their lives and job. Also, people who felt that they were doing highly skilled work are likely to be more positive about the future. These results indicate that the insecurities experienced by individuals affect not only their own lives, but also the acceptance of innovation and technological changes. Therefore, we draw policy implications that inclusive social policy should be established to promote innovation without societal conflicts.
