Abstract

Jeomdong Kim, a 10-year old Korean girl entered into EwhaHaktang, led by her father, partly because of poverty, contemporary Korean society’s custom - which is governed by male-oriented culture: where people adopt a son if they do not have a son - and the birth of younger sister. Ironically, his father worked in a church where he had learned a new culture and learning. However, he was still adhering to Korean traditional custom to let daughters leave family, so that it gave her a chance to learn the Western thought and culture. While learning new studies, living with missionaries in EwhaHaktang, she also assisted female doctor, which opened her eyes to western thought and culture. Gradually, she grew into a woman, named Esther who is full of new thoughts and civilization. Esther married after the introduction from missionaries. Compared with a marriage set up between parents of two families, she could marry with her choice, because the groom was a Christian. A year after her marriage, she followed other missionaries to U.S. where she started to study. Missionaries and their community supported her. However, she could be a doctor mostly because of her will and effort, and her husband full support. Esther Pak returned to Korea as a professional medical doctor. Then along with other female doctors, she helped Korean women. Although the korean society was not welcoming a career woman and even underestimated professional women, she had a pride as a doctor and devoted herself to her job. It was her father’s decision for Esther Pak to get into EwhaHaktang. However, it was her decision in learning new thought, marrying one she loves, going to U.S., becoming a medical doctor, returning to Korea, and performing medical activity for Korean women. So, her story had a tremendous influence on Korean women who wish to make their own lives and stories. It took a long time but it was the reason why there are a number of female medical doctors at present. Therefore, as the first Korean woman studying in U.S., and the first Korea-born female western medical doctor, she is considered as an important figure in modern Korean history.
