Abstract
The first Korean women physicians in Colonial Chosen through study-abroad, except the case of Park Esther, were the graduates of Tokyo Women Medical College(TWMC). The first Korean graduate of TWMC was Heo Yongsuk(1917 graduate), and the second graduate was Jung Jayoung(1918 graduate), following Hyun Ducksin(1921 graduate)∙ Yew Youngjun(1923 graduate) and Kil Junghee(1923 graduate). These women were the pioneering women group in colonial Chosen in the line of the first women physicians. This paper traces the paths of four women physicians from TWMC and shows the activity of the women physicians as women intellectuals. In the historical scene of the women’s movement in colonial Chosen, such as the studying abroad in 1910s, March 1st Independence Movement, and united women movement like Kŭnuhoe in 1920s, these people took their leadership upon the movement and played important role. Also, they received public attention for their prominent character, such as ‘Modern Women’ and ‘New Women Intellectual’. Furthermore, they posed themselves as the leaders of women’s movement, women’s health movement, and movement for women’s medicine. However, usually the result of their activities were not successful. Especially in the case of the movement of establishing women’s medical school in Chosun, they initialized the movement through their network. Nonetheless, the final result-Keijo Women Medical College denied their contribution and effort. This lack of recognition shows the weak positions of these women in the Chosun society, in spite of their reputation.
