역사 속에서 가장 오래된 직업의 하나이자, 사회적 행위의 한 예로서 매춘은 19세기 중엽 이후 제정러시아의 사회사와 여성사에서 매우 독특한 의미를 지닌다. 매춘은 성 행위를 둘러싼 해당사회의 문화와 규범, 권력관계, 사회여론을 광범위하게 보여주는 바로미터이다. 아울러 매춘은 러시아 사회 안에서 여성의 위치, 결혼의 도덕률, 러시아 정교의 가치, 다양한 사회세력의 입장 차이, 경찰의 기능과 범위 등을 여실히 보여준다는 점에서 19세기 중엽이후 엄청난 변화를 겪고 있던 러시아 사회를 비추는 거울이기도 하였다. 이 글은 농노제폐지 이후부터 러시아혁명 전까지 상트페테르부르크의 여성 빈민층을 조명하며, 당대의 사회담론 속에 나타난 매춘에 집중하여 살펴보고자 한다. 결론적으로 이 논문은 공창제도 도입과 실행과정과 성매매의 다양한 양상들을 검토함으로써, 특히 짜르정부가 섹슈얼리티를 사회통제와 규제의 대상으로 삼고 하층의 빈민여성을 통해 구체화했음을 확인하였다.
Abstract
This research has an intention to analyze the relation between women in poverty and prostitution in late imperial Russia. As one of the oldest profession in history and an example of social conduct, the prostitution was hot issue for Russian social history and women’s history. Prostitution reflects the sexual culture, norms, power relation and public opinion surrounding sexual behaviors. In addition, prostitution clearly shows tremendous changes that Russian society had undergone in the women’s status, marital ethics, Russian orthodox value, various social forces, and function of police since the mid-19th century. This article focuses on women in poverty and discourses of contemporary social forces toward the prostitution. It examines the implementation of state-regulated prostitution and various aspects of the poor women in St. Petersburg. In sum, this paper argues that Tsarist government regarded the sexuality as the object of social control and regulation and embodied through the women in poverty.
