본 연구는 미국 문화의 중요한 전달 매체였던 1950년대 기독교 신문·잡지를 중심으로 미국 문화가 어떻게 전달되었고 어떠한 영향력을 발휘하며 우리 안에서 재구성되었는지 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 당대 대미 인식의 차이를 드러내었던 기독교 지식인 신문·잡지를 보수와 진보라는 매체의 특성에 따라 나누고, 미국 문화 담론과 미국에 대한 인식이 어떻게 다르게 드러나고 있으며 어떤 중요한 의미를 갖는지 규명하고자 하였다. 보수 교단이나 기관을 대표하는 교단지나 기관지 형식의 신문·잡지들은 은혜를 베푼 고마운 나라 미국에 대한 친미적인 태도를 취하면서 미국 중심주의를 드러내고 있거나 미국이 한국의 위기를 타개할 수 있는 청교도적인 경건함과 풍요로움을 가진 선망의 대상으로 인식하고 있다. 이는 미국 문화의 왜곡된 면들을 무비판적으로 받아들였다는 한계를 드러내면서 '미국=기독교=반공=친체제'를 지향했던 보수 기독 지성의 기원을 보여준다. 그러나 동시에 청교도적인 경건함을 바탕으로 당대 위기를 극복하며 풍요로움을 나누고자 했던 긍정적인 미국 문화를 내면화시켰다는 긍정적인 측면도 갖는다. 반면, 기독교 전문 출판사나 개인 발행의 진보 잡지들은 미국 문화의 부정적인 측면을 부각시키는 비판적 미국 인식을 드러내면서 세계주의를 지향하고 있거나 긍정적인 미국 문화인 자유와 사회 정의에 대한 연대 의식을 표출하고 있다. 이는 친미적인 흐름에 비해 폭넓은 영향력을 발휘하지 못했다는 점에서 한계를 갖지만, 미국적 가치와 기독교적 가치를 구분하면서 비판적 미국 인식을 형성하였고 한국의 자유와 사회 정의를 실현하기 위해 민주화 운동을 주도했던 진보적인 기독 지성의 기원을 보여준다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다. 이처럼 1950년대 기독교 신문·잡지를 통해 드러난 대미 인식의 차이와 보수·진보의 양극화 현상은 오늘날 한국 지성사의 대미 인식의 분화와 보수·진보의 양극화의 기원을 보여준다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 발견할 수 있다. Abstract
This study focuses on Korean christian journals in the 1950s as a the important transmission media of the American culture. particularly The purpose of this thesis is to study American literature reconstruction within our mind how American culture was transmitted and what this had a influence on korea. Korean christian journals in which understandings of America differ in the context of the 1950s were classified by the media trait of Conservativeness or Progress and examined the important meaning of intellectual history in view of American discourse difference. conservativeness christian journals as a religious organ let America a benefactor of Korea and showed Americanism in a pro-America. moreover they represented America as an object of envy owning the puritanical faith and American affluence. on the other hand progress christian journals as a publishing company or individual publication showed a critical understanding of America and cosmopolitanism. moreover they represented the feeling of solidarity of the American freedom andsociety justice. these Korean christian journals in which understandings of America differ in the context of the 1950s and the bipolarity of conservativeness or progress showed the origin of the bipolarity of conservativeness or progress and the difference of the recognition with America in the Korean intellectual history these days.
