이 연구는 보수 개신교가 한국사회에서 유통되는 미디어 담론을 생산하는 주요 주체 중 하나라는 인식에서 출발하여, 이명박 정부 기간 한국교회언론회가 발표한 논평 및 보도 자료에 대한 비판적 담론분석을 통해 한국 보수 개신교의 미디어관이 지닌 성격과 특징을 탐색하였다. 분석에 따르면, 보수 개신교는 자신들에 대한 세속사회의 부정적 시선, 문화적 타락, 사회적 혼란 등을 현 사회가 겪고 있는 매우 부정적 현상이라고 규정한다. 그리고 이 각각의 현상들은 독립적인 것이 아니라, 서로 연결된 것으로 인식한다. 또한, 그 원인을 미디어의 강력한 힘을 활용하여 자신들의 이익을 추구하고, 잘못된 세계관에 입각하여 사회를 주도하려는 세력들의 부당한 의도에 돌리고 있다. 이러한 현실 인식은 보수 개신교의 “영적 전쟁” 프레임으로 재해석되는데, 이를 통해 신학적 보수와 정치사회 적 보수의 자연스러운 접합이 가능해진다. 문화적 타락과 사회적 혼란이라는 현실 진단의 공유를 바탕으로 진보세력에 의해 주도되는 사회변화를 부정적으로 평가하는 데 인식을 같이하는 것이다. 여기서 “안티 기독교” 현상은 신학적 보수와 정치사회적 보수 사이를 매개하여 서로 접합될 수 있도록 만드는 연결고리로 작동한다.
Abstract
This study explores how the conservative Protestantism bloc in Korea defines and characterizes the media, by analyzing official comments and press releases produced by Korean Association of Church Communication during the Lee Myung-Bak administration. It is revealed that the religious group describes the current social condition is much problematic, illustrated by three related indications, the publics negative sentiment towards Protestantism, cultural decadence, and social instability. According to this view, those symptoms are not separate, but explicitly interrelated. They are inclined to ascribe the pessimistic condition to the progressive and anti-Christian forces in the society, which they believe willfully manipulate the medias power to pursue the camps’ unsound aspirations. This kind of perception is reinforced by their own conservative, fundamentalist in a way, theological interpretations, which make the articulation between theological and political conservatism easily possible. The two different ideological positions share the ways to understand the current social and cultural state of the society. In this process, the publics hostile mentality against Protestantism, so-called “anti-Christian sentiment, works as a connecting link between the two different ideological groups.
