Abstract
This thesis dealt with the problem of ‘Modern Korean Perception of China’ revealed in the process of accepting modern Chinese literature centered on Lu Xun in colonial Korea in the 1930s. The biggest characteristic of the acceptance of modern Chinese literature is that the existence of classical Chinese literature, which has an affinity with Korean literature, was concealed. Korea’s acceptance of Lu Xun during the colonial period was characterized by strong influence of mediation terms such as World Literature or Proletarian Literature. The authority of World Literature, which was appropriated by overseas literary groups, was also the recognition of the most general literature of the time. In colonial Korea, Lu Xun was repeatedly called out as a member of World Literature based on Romain Roland’s ‘complmentary’ rather than analysis on his work. In the course of the Chinese Revolutionary Literature debate in the late 1920s, Qian Xing Cun(錢杏邨, 1900-1977), a left-wing literary critic, declared Lu Xun as an existence that could not keep up with the changes of the times. This radical ‘death sentence’ was quickly spread throughout East Asia via the Chinese-Japanese Proletarian Literature network. Around 1930, when Lu Xun began to be introduced in earnest to colonial Korea, the mainstream of East Asian criticism on Lu Xun was the image of the “The Bygone Era of Ah Q” by Qian Xing Cun. It was Karashima Takeshi(辛島驍, 1903-1967), a professor in the Department of Chinese Literature at Keijo Imperial University who brought this perspective to colonial Korea. Although the Department of Chinese Literature at Keijo University had the authority of academia, their understanding of Lu Xun, which was followed by Takeshi Karashima, Kim Tae-Joon(金台俊, 1905-1949), and Lee Myeongseon(李明善, 1914-1950), had a fatal weakness in that it lacked direct reading of Lu Xun’s works. Nevertheless, the authority of the university system was the object of envy of intellectuals in the private academic society. Kim Gwang-ju(金光洲, 1910-1973) and Jeong Rae-dong(丁來東, 1903-1985)’s ‘companion’ network tried to appropriate the realm of Chinese literature in earnest based on local experience and Chinese reading ability. In addition to understanding and introduction to Chinese literature, Kim Kwang-ju was exposed to the envy of Western authority enjoyed by World Literature. The most authentic criticism on Lu Xun of colonial Korea was written by Jeong Rae-dong. Jeong directly refuted the “The Bygone Era of Ah Q” that dominated colonial Korea, while showing the true value of “Wild Grass,” the earliest period in East Asia at the time. Outside the authority of World Literature, Proletarian literature, and academia, a new level of Chinese literature research of Korea began to open.
