Abstract

The four copies of The Brief History of Chinese Fiction(中國小說史略) published in the 1920s in the Old & Rare Reference Room of Seoul National University, including the world’s rarest copy, a reprint published in 1925, were most likely brought to Korea during the Japanese occupation. Therefore, The Brief History of Chinese Fiction in the Old & Rare Reference Room is evidence of significant academic exchanges between Korea and China since the 1920s, when the establishment of modern national studies was activated through the writing of literary history. It also indicates that we can think about the ‘East Asian Context of Korean Studies’ through The Brief History of Chinese Fiction. This is because Korean studies as a modern national studies cannot be without intersections with those of China and Japan as they have faced the Western modernity in common, and in this respect, the East Asian Context can be constructed at least a posteriori. Based on this premise, this article first examines the synchronic and diachronic impact of Lu Xun(魯迅)’s The Brief History of Chinese Fiction, and then proposes an East Asian context that can be derived from Lu Xun’s writing of the history of Chinese fiction, including the folk literature that gained literary citizenship, the specificity of the “double modernity” that simultaneously realized modernity and overcame modernity as expressed in the literary realm, and the narrative strategy of “brief(略)” in Chinese studies writing. Based on the above considerations, I also pointed out why The Brief History of Chinese Fiction is still regarded as an ideal model of writing Chinese fiction history that has not been overcome more than 100 years after its publication.
