Abstract
This essay explores the fascist phenomena in Great Britain and France, focused on the British Union of Fascists (BUF) and the Croix de Feu (CF) in the 1930s. It aims to draw some implications from these fascist examples with regard to a concept of generic fascism suggested by the so-called consensus school, not to study comparatively two fascist organizations. The main issues are whether two fascist organizations in each country were planted or indigenous, rightist or leftist, and how we ought to understand them between category and spectrum. A closer look would probably reveal that, firstly, the fascist phenomena in UK and France emerged as an indigenous and national forces under the influences of the “magnetic field of fascism,” secondly, they showed both rightist and leftist characteristics rather than neither right nor left, and thirdly, they existed in a broad spectrum of the contemporary political forces. Thereafter, it is thought that these considerations for fascism require a perspective whose emphasis is placed on the changing processes and relations, not on the fixed ‘nature’ as assumed by consensus school’s definition of generic fascism. In this perspective, we can treat fascism as something hybrid which in fact happens in a specific historical context as well as an empirical and historical object of study, bypassing endless controversies over alibi of fascism in each country.
