Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to reconsider the true purpose behind the Britain's diplomatic and military intervention policies immediately after the Gabsin Coup of 1884. When the Gabsin Coup broke out, Britain tried to frustrate Russia's advances into Korea and also to defend Britain's economic interest in East Asia. To achieve that end, the British legation and consulate workers in the East Asia region initiated diplomatic intervention. W. G. Aston, the consul general to Korea, accepted the Korean government's ‘good offices’ to be a mediator between Korea and Japan to resolve the conflicts between two nations amicably. H. S. Parkes, the British Minister to both China and Korea, lead the mediation between China and Japan, and he wished to elicit the both Chinese and Japanese troops' withdrawal while reforming Korea. In Korea, the British Admiralty had begun the field investigation on Geomundo (Port Hamilton) upon hearing the news of the Gabsin Coup. Throughout the investigation, the Admiralty kept receiving the reports on Russia's potential advances into Korea by the British Foreign Office. The military tension between Britain and Russia heightened in Afghanistan and on March 28, 1885, the British Admiralty ordered to move to Geomundo. The Island was seized on April 15, 1885. With this act, Britain succeeded in diplomatic and military interventions in Korea. However, the succession did not lead to strengthening Britain's diplomatic presence in East Asia because Britain failed to gain support from the East Asian countries on the seizure of Geomundo.
