제국주의의 조선해역 침공은 크게 두 가지 방향으로 진행된다. 하나는 조선침략을 위해 서해안에서 수도로 가는 길목을 군사적으로 장악하는 것이다. 그것은 프랑스 선교사의 박해를 빌미로 삼아 프랑스 함대가 조선의 수도를 향해 접근하면서 그 길목인 강화도를 점령한 병인양요로 나타났다. 다른 하나는 동아시아 해역을 둘러싼 열강의 대립과 경쟁 속에서 조선해역의 전략적 가치를 활용하는 것이다. 이것은 러시아의 남하를 저지하기 위해 1885년 영국군이 거문도를 불법적으로 점령한 사건에서 확인된다. 조선은 주변부 변방에 위치했지만 지리적 전략적 중요성으로 인하여 거문도와 그 주민은일찍이 제국주의와 근대의 세계를 경험했다. 이 연구에서는 거문도 주민들이 제국주의와 근대에 어떻게 대응했는지 검토했다. 먼저 거문도 사건의 배경을 검토했다. 그동안의 연구는 1885년 거문도사건에 국한하는 경우가 대부분이었다. 이 연구에서는 거문도 사건이 1885년에 갑자기 일어난 것이 아니고1845년 영국해군이 거문도를 발견 탐사한 이후 40년에 걸쳐 거문도를 선점하려는 제국주의열강의 전략적 경쟁을 배경으로 한다는 점에 주목했다. 다음으로 거문도 주민의 경험과 대응을 검토했다. 1845년 이후 서양인이 거문도를 방문했을 때 주민들은 어떻게 그들과 소통했는지를 검토했다. 거문도를 점령한 영국군의 생활상에 대한 연구는 약간 나와 있지만, 이것도 주민의 입장에서 재검토했다. 무엇보다 거문도 명명의 배경이 된 거문도의 사상적 리더 巨儒文士 金瀏의 대응을 살펴보았다. 외세의 침략에 대해 우려하면서 유학자가 잠수함을 구상하는 모습을 볼 수 있었다.
Abstract
The imperialistic invasion of Joseon by sea took basically place in two ways. The first way involved taking military control of the pathway to the capital cityof Joseon from the west coast. This shows from the French Invasion in 1866when the French fleet occupied Ganghwado Island, the pathway to the capitalof Joseon, under the pretext of the persecution of French missionaries. Thesecond way in which invasion took place involved utilizing the strategic valueof the seas around Joseon in world powers’ conflict and competition over theseas of East Asia. This shows from the British Army illegally occupyingGeomundo Island in 1885 to hinder Russia's advance southwards. Because Geomundo Island is located at the frontier of Joseon, it hasgeo-strategic importance. This is also the reason why the inhabitants ofGeomundo Island, early on, experienced imperialism and things Western. Thisstudy reviews how the Geomundo Island inhabitants responded to this. First, the study reviews the background of the Geomundo Incident. Precedingstudies are mostly limited to the Geomundo Incident in 1885. This study,however, pays attention to the fact that: the Geomundo Incident did not happensuddenly in 1885. Since the British Navy discovered and investigated the islandin 1845, the Geomundo Incident moved ahead for 40 years under the imperialpowers’ strategic competition over the island. Next, this study reviews the Geomundo Island inhabitants’ experiences andresponses and also looks into how the inhabitants communicated with westernerswho visited Geomundo Island after 1845. From the viewpoint of the inhabitants,this study reexamines a few earlier studies on the lifestyle of the British Armythat occupied Geomundo Island. In particular, this study closely looks into theresponses of Kim Ryu as Geoyu-munsa, great Confucian scholar, who was anideological leader in Geomundo Island. This Confucian scholar mapped out theidea of a submarine, being concerned about a foreign invasion.
