Abstract
This research aims to discover how the attitude of James VI toward the witchcraft developed through the North Berwick witch trials of 1590-1. James himself was deeply involved in the trials and more than 60 peoples were accused of witchcraft. The process of the trials and persecutions was used to strengthen his kingship. However, this was the result, rather than the motivation of the trials. James initially intervened the trials with his personal intellectual curiosity, but eventually came to believe that the aim of the witchcraft was to destroy the divine kingship. The king had experienced misfortunes at his own marriage process and the trials of the 5th Earl of Bothwell, which he regarded as the plot of the devil against his personal piety. The strengthening of his kingship was the trophy of his war against the witchcraft. The report of the North Berwick trials, Newes From Scotland was a propaganda of his victory and a declaration that he and his kingship was under God’s protection.
