Abstract

The Union of England and Scotland, usually referred to as the Union of Crowns, took place on 24 March 1603, when James VI of Scotland acceded to the English throne after the death of Elizabeth I. It was a dynastic and regal union, not an incorporation of the two kingdoms. Further, it did not unite the laws, political institutions or churches of the two kingdoms, James simply wore the two crowns in the way that a pluralist held two benefices in the Middle Ages. James wanted everything integrated, expecting one parliament, one law, one church and one nation named Great Britain. But the union question was a complex one and James did not realize his desire for a perfect union of the two kingdoms. England considered Scotland inferior to itself and viewed the union as absorption of Scotland into a greater England. For its part, Scotland insisted upon maintenance of its fundamental laws and institutions. Insistence on both sides to keep their established systems forced James to seek a more practical form of union. The various debates, responses and issues during this period also impacted debates on union in 1707.
