Abstract
This study aims at re-constructing the religious culture of the 17th century New England puritans with the historiographical methodology of micro-history on the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Three kinds of historical documents will be examined: the 1692 Salem Witch Trial records; the Salem Church records; and the sermon notes of Samuel Parris of the Salem church. This study will show that the Salem Witch Trials were executed by the 17th century puritans of New England and the tragedy was derived from enmity between two groups in the Salem church. The 17th century New England puritans did not accept difference and diversity, so that enmity within the Salem church resulted. Moreover, the negative thoughts on women and the faith in magic and witchcraft generated the witch trial within the religious culture of 17th century New England.
