초록

『알렉산드라 매거진』은 1864년~1865년이란 단기간 출간되었던 간행물이지만 여성이 자신의 삶을 경영하는 주체로 서는 것을 적극적으로 돕고자 한 정기간행물이다. 이 간행물은 빅토리아 사회가 수동적인 여성과 사회에서 여성의 분리를 조장했기 때문에 남성의 것으로 여겨지던 ‘일’의 공간으로 여성들의 진입을 강조하고자 했다. 특히 빅토리아 시대 사회에 팽배했던 성 역할에 대한 고정관념적인 의식의 틀을 깨트리고, ‘일하는 여성’에 대한 사회적 비판과 제한들에 대항하는 포럼을 제공하고자 했다. 본 글은 이러한 『알렉산드라 매거진』이 여성들에게 필요한 고용과 교육, 여성이 할 수 있는 일과 스스로의 지위 확립을 위한 ‘정보와 지식’을 전달하는 토론의 장으로서 그 가치를 고찰하고 있다. 이로부터 여성을 ‘의존적인 위치’에 존재하게 하고 ‘비활동성’이라는 특성을 부여하게 한 빅토리아 사회를 비판함과 동시에 문제의 대안을 여성 스스로 마련하고자 했다는 사실을 발견하고 있다. 나아가 『알렉산드라 매거진』이 여성의 일할 권리를 지지하며 이후 급진적인 여성운동가들의 실천적 행동 및 의식과도 연결되는 여성권리 주창을 위한 역할에 일조했다는 것을 확인하고 있다.

Abstract

The Alexandra Magazine is a journal published in the short period of time from 1864 to 1865. However, it is a journal that actively helped women to be the subject of their life. The journal tried to emphasize the entry of women into the working space, which had been considered as masculine space because Victorian society encouraged the separation between social women and passive women. In particular, they attempted to break the framework of stereotyped consciousness about the sex role that prevailed in Victorian society and to counter the social criticism and limited conditions of ‘working woman’. It also tried to criticize the idea that contemporary society made women live in ‘dependent positions’ and gave them characteristics of ‘inactivity’. Therefore this study confirms that the Alexandra Magazine has proved its value as a forum for women to convey necessary information and knowledge for employment and education, what women can do and establish their own positions. In addition, it finds that the Alexandra Magazine was supporting the women’s right to work and was then carrying out formal tasks for advocating the rights of women to be linked to the practical actions and consciousness of radical women activists later on.
