Abstract
In recent, some research find that two-sided word-of-mouth(WOM) has stronger impact on consumer attitude than one-sided WOM(i.e., positive only WOM). Two-sided WOM can be defined the WOM which has messages both positive and negative valences. According to prior research, consumers usually trust two-sided WOM more than one-sided WOM, because it includes not only positive message but also negative one. Actually, prior research explore moderating factors of two-sided WOM effect. However, there is no research for exploring the reasons why consumers generate two-sided WOM. Thus, this research has the purpose for finding motives of two-sided WOM, especially focusing egoistic and altruistic motives. For this research, the authors design a regression model which includes four motives(self-enhancement, self-affirmation, helping others, information sharing) as dependent variables and WOM intention as independent variable. For testing our hypotheses, we conduct a survey for gathering data and analyze it. In a result, we find that egoistic motives influenced two-sided WOM intention, but altruistic motives has no impact on two-sided WOM intention. Especially, the self-enhancement motive has positive impact on two-sided WOM intention in positive experience condition, while the self-affirmation motive influence positively two-sided WOM intention in negative experience condition. In sum, this results suggest that two-sided WOM is usually generated by WOM sender’s egoistic motives.
