Abstract

This study aims to apply firm’s internal resources as a way to develop new products. In other words, the focus is on enhancing the performance of new product development by applying the accumulated technological knowledge within the firm to develop products that can be utilized in heterogeneous industries at the stage of giving modularity to the product structure. In this study, a research model is established for the moderating effect of technological knowledge applicability in relation to product modularity and new product development performance, and data were collected from 470 domestic manufacturing firms to test by hierarchical regression analysis. The finding shows that product modularity is found to have a positive effect on new product development performance. And application of technological knowledge positively moderates product modularity and performance relationship of new product development. The results of this study implies that accumulated knowledge resources inside the firm (e.g. product technology, R&D knowledge, and knowledge of product functions) can be applied to new product development.
