정약용 경학사상의 인식론적 전환과 근대 서구과학정신

이글은 정약용 경학사상의 인식론적 전환이 근대 서구과학정신에 대해서 가지고 있는 함의를 규명하는 데 지향되어 있다. 당시에 한국 신유학은 “리기”라는 특유의 개념을 가지고 세계와 우주의 생성과정을 체계적으로 설명하고 있었다. 그렇지만 서구문명 세력의 도전에 직면하여 한국 신유학은 자신의 무기력성을 여지없이 드러내고 있었다. 시대적 전환기를 살아가고 있던 정약용은 젊은 지성의 한 사람으로서 유교문명의 동질성을 유지하면서 근대화를 달성하기 위해서 자신의 지적전통을 획기적으로 재해석하는 엄청난 모험을 감행하였다. 그는 당시 신유학의 세계에서는 대단히 낯설다고 할 수 있는 세계 밖에 존재하는 전지전능의 인격신인상제개념을 고대 유교경전에서 찾아내어 전혀 다른 각도로 해석하여 새로운 의미를 부여하려고 시도했다. 그에 의하면 천지라 불리는 자연세계는 신 자체가 아니라 신이 만들어낸 작품이며, 조화 또한 신이 아니라 그것이 남긴 발자취이다. 때문에 인간의 자연세계에 대한 “면밀한” 관찰을 통해서 그것의 이치(천도)를 파악해낼 수 있다. 천도는 지성(至誠) 그 자체임으로 한 치의 오차도 허용하지 않는 법칙적 성격을 지니고 있다. 필자는 윤리적 의미를 가지고 있는 “조화의 자취”를 파악하려고 헌신적으로 매진하는 바로 이 지점에서 서양의 근대과학 정신과 정약용의 경학사상이 대화할 수 있는 접점을 발견할 수 있다고 주장하고 있다
Abstract
This study is aimed at to explore the radical cognitive rupture from the established Neo-Confucian frames done by Chung Yak Yong in his Kyunghak Thought and some implications it has for the development of modern western science. In the 18th century Neo-Confucian scholars systematically explained how the world is created with the concept of Li-Ki. However, they were too ignorant of modern science to meet a challenge from the western civilization. In the situation of such an intellectual crisis, Chung Yak Yong ventured an epistemological change, as a way of reinterpreting traditional confucian thoughts while keeping their unique identity, in order to lay the groundwork for scientific development in Korea. In the course of doing that, he found out the being of Heavenly King from the ancient confucian classics, and conceptualized it into personalized God external to the world, as a concept which was revolutionary as well as quite strange at that time. According to Chung Yak Yong, the nature called Heaven and Earth is not a God but God's creation, changing Harmony is not a God but God's footsteps, and thus thoroughly investigating into the nature can lead us to discover the Heavenly way as general rules or laws working on the world. Therefore, it might be said that the most serious effort to gain insights into the natural order or harmony in the Kyunghak Thought of Chung Yak Yong is identical with the painstaking exertion to reach objective truths in the western modern science.
