영국인의 국가정체성: ‘군주정’과 ‘정체성의 연속성’ 문제를 중심으로

이 연구는 먼저 영국 군주정과 왕실의례의 의미를 국가정체성의 관점에서 탐색해 보고자 했다. 연구에 의하면, 영국 군주정은 영국인의 일상적 삶에서 작동해 온 국가정체성의 실체를 보여주는 대표적인 역사적 실례인 것으로 확인되었다. 영국인들은 이를 매개로 같은 영국인으로서의 정체성을 공유해 온 것이다. 또한, 영국인의 국가정체성 연구는 정체성 의식에 스며들 수 있는 전통의 연속성에 대한 과장이나 왜곡의 유혹을 경계해야 함을 일깨워주었다. 이 연구에서는 영국인들이 민족적 구성의 상이함과 그간의 국내외적 환경 변화에도 불구하고 여전히 국가정체성을 공통된 삶의 기반으로 삼고 있는지에 대해서도 분석해 보았다. 영국인들은 군주정을 비롯한 여러 상징들을 통해 지속적으로 국가정체성을 폭넓게 공유해 온 것으로 나타났다. 군주와 왕실의 역할, 국가정체성의 구성 내용에 있어서는 시대와 환경의 변화를 반영한 변화도 있는 것으로 드러났다.
Abstract
The first purpose of this paper is to understand the meanings of monarchy and royal ritual in the light of the perspective of national identity. British monarchy turned out to be a historical case of national identity that had exerted an important effect on British daily life. The British have shared national identity as the same people through them. This study also reminds us to previse an exaggeration or a distortion of continuity of tradition that might permeate into the identity. The second and third purposes of this study are to analyze whether or not the British have shared national identity by several symbols including monarchy to this day in spite of different ethnic composition and changes at home and abroad. The study shows that the British still have widely shared national identity. It is also found that roles of the monarch and royal family, and components of national identity have been changing according to changes of the times and environment.
