이 글은 사랑받기 보다는 두려움의 대상이 되어야 한다는 마키아벨리의 두려움의 통치를 살펴본다. 마키아벨리의 두려움의 통치는 크게 군주 그 자신이 두려움의 대상이 되어야 한다는 것과 군주의 두려움의 대상인 인민과 외부세력을 통제하는 통치를 통해 제시된다. 미국과 유럽에서 나타나고 있는 반이민⋅반난민 정서의 확산과 극우민족주의를 기치로 내건 정당의 제도권 정치로의 진입은 민주주의 시대에 마키아벨리의 두려움의 정치가 어떠한 모습으로 변주되고 있는지를 잘 보여준다. 이 글은 미국 대통령 트럼프를 중심으로, 그의 미국 우선주의와 이민자와 난민에 대한 적극적인 타자화로 나타난 마키아벨리의 두려움의 통치를 살펴보고, 마키아벨리의 충실한 제자이자, ‘마키아벨리안 군주’(Machiavellian Prince)로서의 트럼프를 드러내고자 한다.
Abstract
This article examines Machiavelli’s rule of fear. Machiavelli’s rule of fear seems to be suggested that the prince himself should be object of fear to the people and that he should control the people and external forces, of which he is afraid. The spread of anti-immigrant and anti-refugee sentiment in the United States and Europe and the political party’s entry into institutional politics under the banner of far-right nationalism demonstrates how Machiavelli’s politics of fear is transforming in the democratic era. This article also examines the rule of Machiavelli’s fear, which was manifested by U.S. President Trump highlighting America first and presenting immigrants and refugees as “others.” Therefore This article concludes that the President Trump is a faithful disciple of Machiavelli, the Machiavellian Prince.
