Abstract

This research investigates the conditions under which President Donald Trump as right-wing populist could emerge during the 2016 US presidential election. By investigating the environment under which American voters favored Trumpism, it attempted to reveal the causes under which right-wing populism prevailed in American political environment. Empirical analysis demonstrates that variables of pessimistic prospect over economic development and perception of worsening income inequality have affected voter’s preference on Trump over traditional conservative candidates such as Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio. In terms of American foreign policy, the inherent nativist and anti-establishment characteristics of populism will strengthen uncertainty and isolationist tone of current American foreign policy under the Trump Administration. Especially immigration issue where American voters’ dissatisfaction over income inequality and cultural backlash overlap is likely to be raised by populist politicians.
