본 논문은 정치적 현실주의의 주제 아래 한비와 마키아벨리의 정치사상의 밑바탕에 자리 잡고 있는 문제의식, 논리구조, 인식 틀을 검토하고자 한다. 첫째 두 사람이 정치영역의 독특함과 자율성을 내세우게 되는 현실 분석의 논리를 인간 본성론과 도덕론으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 둘째, 두 사상가의 공통분모를 ‘정치제도를 통한 인간 본성의 순치(馴致)’로 파악하고 그들이 목표했던 정치체제의 구체적 성격, 그 뒤를 떠받치고 있는 문제의식을 검토하고자 했다. 셋째, 현실주의자로서 두 사람의 정치사상이 시공간을 달리함으로써 나타난 차이점을 분석하였다. 이 글은 한비와 마키아벨리의 정치적 현실주의를 그들이 대결하고자 했던 낡은 사상체계와의 관련성 속에서 살피고, 답변이라는 결과물이 아니라 그 답을 이끌어냈던 그들의 문제의식, 논리구조, 사유체계에 주목하며, 정치적 현실주의라는 공통의 항목이 시공간을 달리하며 어떻게 달라지는지 검토하려는 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the problematique, logical structure, and epistemological frame underlying political thoughts of Han Fei Tzǔ and N. Machiavelli along the theme of political realism. To do this, first, their theories of human nature and morals are investigated to understand their logic of analyzing the reality which stresses the distinctiveness and autonomy of the political realm. Secondly, as the common denominator of their political thoughts is identified as the “domestication of human nature by political institutions” according to the basic principle of political realism, the substantial characteristics of political institutions they sought to construct and their problematique underlying them are reviewed. Thirdly, the differences between the two realist thinkers are identified and explained, as they developed their political theories in different temporal-spatial settings. Overall, this paper examines political realism of Han Fei Tzǔ and Machiavelli in relation to prevalent political thoughts of their times they were confronted with respectively, pays special attention to their problematique, logical structure and epistemological system which produced their realist political thought rather than their resultant political thought itself, and explores how political realism appeared, varying with different temporal-spacial dimensions.
