Abstract
This study analyzes hierarchical meanings in consumer products, specifically shoes. Firstly, we conducted in-depth interviews mixed with projective techniques with teens to twenties and fifties to sixties consumers, each group consists of five. Next, structure equivalence analysis based on the network theory was carried out in order to understand the hierarchical structure of meanings in different age groups. The results of this study are as follows. First, the way people value shoes is grouped into four types of categories: the means of conspicuousness, the pursuit of aesthetic value, the expression of identities, and the collection. Although these meanings of categories are shown in both the elderly and the young, it is significantly different why they accept each meaning. Secondly, the way people value shoes is different in the hierarchical structure according to age. The young, for example, regard the differentiation as the most essential value in shoes, while the elderly do the self-satisfaction. The findings of this study suggest that the understanding of meanings in products provides the more understanding of why consumers buy things.
