Abstract
Recent resistance by the taxi industry to increasing carpool service implies in essence social conflicts according to expansion of sharing economy and it contains interests of the government, enterprises and consumers. Consumers are agents to create a new kind of value added and increase utility in the sharing economy but they are being alienated from public deliberation to solve carpool conflicts and problems. Paying attention to such an issue above, this study aimed to conduct interpretation of social issues and debates about carpool from a perspective of consumers. Main research findings are as follows. Firstly, as a result of text mining on 6,033 press releases of carpool for 3 years, ‘taxi service industry(provider)’, ‘carpool service industry(provider)’ and ‘government’were derived as top-level words so it suggests these agents are key stakeholders of a social issue but ‘consumers’ were relatively less mentioned. ‘Labor issue’ and ‘right to live’ for employees in the industry were mentioned at an outstandingly higher level than ‘economic efficiency/utility’, ‘usability(convenience)’ and ‘eco-friendly’, positive functions of carpool for consumers and social environments. Secondly, analytic results of eigenvector centrality also showed centrality of stakeholders including ‘taxi service industry (provider)’, carpool service industry (provider)’ and ‘government’ was much higher than that of ‘consumers’. Besides, not only centrality of ‘right to live’ and ‘labor issue’ for the taxi industry and its employees was higher, but also centrality of ‘government supports/subsidies’, ‘monthly pay plan (introduction)’ and ‘money paid to company (abolition)’ needed for improving a taxi driving environment was higher than that of consumers’ and social utility of carpool-‘economic efficiency/utility’, ‘usability(convenience)’ and ‘eco-friendly. Hence, it shows that arguments about carpool in our society focus on supplier-centered labor issues. On the other hand, as a result of betweenness centrality analysis, betweenness centrality values of ‘public transportation/means of transportation’ were higher so it reveals that carpool service is connected to transportation issues to solve an urban traffic jam and enhance consumers’ right to move. Furthermore, key words including governmental ‘arbitration/intervention’, ‘criticism/reproach’ and ‘public opinion’ suggest a high level of expectation within a society for government roles in various issues and conflicts of carpool, showing that critical opinions about a governmental function for resolution of conflicts may have a great effect on a flow of debates about carpool in the whole society. Thirdly, in addition to discussion about changing environments of sharing economy markets represented by carpool, as a result of CONCOR analysis, the study confirmed that roles and demands of market participants are under discussion with mixed divergent interests. The government playing a role in intervention and support, consumers demanding convenience and economic efficiency of carpool, the taxi industry demanding job security have distinct interests therefore it suggests need for a collaborative approach from an integrated perspective. Finally, as a result of QAP analysis on network composed of words regarding interests of agents in a market, taxi service providers had a quite higher correlation with carpool service providers compared with consumers, showing that both providers have similar points of agreement in involvement in and discussions about expansion of carpool service. Meanwhile, there is a lower correlation between consumers and taxi service providers. It is possible to assume that they have no similar points of agreement in involvement in carpool issues, therefore their conflicts may be another social issue in addition to conflicts between both providers.
