According to the government's Romanization system, which was officially proclaimed on July 4, 2000, Romanization of family names was to be determined separately. The National Institute of the Korean Language, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, porposed its revised system of Romanization for Korean family names on June 25, 2009 and has a plan to decide its offical one for writing Korean family names in the Roman alphabet since there are no official guidelines for it. The purpose of this study is twofold: i) to compare five systems for writing Korean family names in the English alphabets, and ii) to propsoe which system is the most appropriate. Investigated five systems are the government's official Romanization system(2000), the revised system of Romanization for Korean family names proposed by The National Institute of the Korean Languag(2009), Byungsun Yaang(2008)'s Syllable-based Romanization for Korean personal names, Romanization for Korean family names proposed
