Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a brilliant expositor who was committed to cam- pus mission through expository preaching. It is important to examine his hermeneutical principles to understand his preaching. Lloyd-Jones examines the roots of the Greek words, synchronic and diachronic study, the historical and cultural background and various grammatical elements to grasp the ex- act meaning of words. For examination of meaning of the text, Lloyd-Jones adopts various approaches such as historical and cultural context, literary context, comparing Scripture with Scripture, doctrinal Interpretation, and history of interpretation. However, despite the merits of his approach, Lloyd-Jones’s principles have a few shortcomings. First, his hermeneutical attitude towards modern scholarship seems too closed. Second, his overly various interpretations sometimes leads to confusion. Third, his own doctrinal stances seem to ex- clude another possible interpretation.
