Abstract
This study empirically analyzes the impact of online community use on the intensification of gender conflict in South Korea. The analysis draws on data from a nationwide voter survey conducted immediately after the 20th presidential election, with dependent variables including perceptions of the severity of gender conflict and attitudes toward the abolition of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the abolition of gender quotas, and the implementation of mandatory military service for women. The regression results show that greater use of online communities strengthens men’s support for the abolition of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and gender quotas, thereby widening the opinion gap with women. In contrast, no clear gender difference was observed regarding mandatory military service for women, although higher levels of online community use were associated with greater support for the policy. Overall, these findings demonstrate that the use of online communities exacerbates divergences in men’s and women’s attitudes toward gender policies and provide empirical evidence that online communities play a role in the escalation of gender conflict.
