Abstract
Recent studies highlight the serious issue of affective polarization among supporters of South Korea’s two major political parties. This study focuses on online community usage as a cause of affective polarization and empirically analyzes its impact on the affective polarization of Korean voters. By analyzing data from the 20th South Korean presidential election survey, this research found that a higher frequency of online community usage correlates with increased levels of affective polarization. Specifically, more frequent online community usage was associated with significantly more hostile feelings toward opposing political parties. Furthermore, this relationship between the frequency of online community usage and affective polarization was heightened by lower levels of satisfaction with one's economic situation.
