Abstract

This study examines the relationship between society’s child-rearing values and the level of well-being of children in those societies. We used data on child-rearing values from OECD and EU countries participating in the World Values Survey (WVS) and child well-being rankings from the UNICEF Innocenti report, and applied latent class analysis and correlation analyses. The main findings are as follows. First, child-rearing values were divided into two latent classes: self-directed and norm-respecting. Second, countries with the highest proportion of self-directed latent class included Japan, South Korea, and Germany, while countries with the highest proportion of norm-respecting latent class included Mexico, Cyprus, and Turkiye. Third, countries with high proportions of self-directed class had significantly higher levels of well-being in physical health and skills. However, the proportions of self-directed or norm-respecting classes were not significantly associated with mental well-being of children. Based on the findings, strengthening social support to improve the well-being of Korean children and future research directions were suggested.
