탈식민적 상황에서의 한국 연극의 자기 재현

본 연구는 다문화주의와 문화상호주의의 화려한 수사 속에서 한국극문학계에 제기된 탈식민주의적 관점의 체험적, 반성적 문제의식을 재점검하고, 이에 의해 촉발된 극문학 분야의 현장, 비평 및 학계의 논의를 재검토한다. 이 작업은 궁극적으로는 극문학 연구와 비평에 있어서의 탈식민주의 비평이론의 비평적 위치에 대한 점검이다. 한국극문학 분야에 있어서 탈식민주의 담론은 문화상호주의의 미명 하에 진행되고 있는 세계연극계의 제국주의적 성격에 대한 비판과 밀접한 관련을 갖는다. 문화상호주의가 추구하는 장르와 국가간의 경계를 허무는 보편주의의 이상이라는 것이 결국에는 제3세계의 문화를 유럽중심적 시각으로 재현케 하는 것임을 비판하는 것이다. 재현의 문제는 계급, 성, 인종, 민족, 종교, 지식권력의 문제가 복잡하게 얽힌 탈식민적 상황에서는 문화정체성의 문제와 관련이 되어 논의되어야 하며, 이는 수행적 정체성의 문제, 위치의 정치학의 문제가 된다. 이에 몇몇 탈식민주의 연극은 타자성이라는 조건을 토대로 주변으로부터 자신을 바라보려는 시도를 한다. 노다 히데키가 한국에서 작업한 <빨간 도깨비>나 박상현 작 <자객열전>, 오태영 작 <피묻은 바지>는 이러한 가능성을 보여주는 작품이다. 이들은 자신이 생산하고 있는 지식생산의 위치, 그 과정, 거기에 있을 수 있는 권력의 개입 등, 자신이 위치 지워진 구체적 맥락에 대한 반성적 성찰을 시도하며 스스로의 한계를 인정하는 작업이라는 점에서 의미가 있다. 위치잡기의 문제는 탈식민주의 연극비평에 있어서도 중요하다. 자신의 작업에 있을 제약에 대해 재검토하고 스스로의 한계와 위치를 규정하는 일은 복잡한 정치적 문화적 맥락에 놓인 탈식민주의 비평가에게 필연적으로 요구되는 사항이기 때문이다. 그런데 서구에서 수입된 탈식민주의 비평이론의 적용 역시 서구 식민지식에 종속되는 것임을 반성하는 비평가들은 자신의 사유 자체를 탈식민화하려는 시도를 하기도 한다. 이럴 때 탈식민으로의 열망은 종종 민족주의로의 회귀로 결론지어지기도 한다. 그러나 이 역시 민족 정체성의 확고함이라는 환상에 기인하는 것이거나 중심부의 눈치를 살피는 종속적 태도로, 오히려 이는 탈식민주의 상황 하의 한국연극 읽기에서 경계해야 할 지점이기도 하다. 이러한 딜레마의 극복에 탈식민주의 비평적 위치에 대한 자각은 지배와 복종의 정치학을 벗어나는 가능성이자, 이분법적 양극단을 거부하고 새로운 언어를 통해 우리를 재현하는 방법이다. 문화 혼종적인 조건 하에서 다양하게 억압되어 있는 문제를 모두 간파하기는 어렵다는 것을 비평가들은 인정해야 한다. 그리고 바로 이러한 자각, 즉 자신의 비평적 작업이 무의식적으로 행하고 있을 수도 있는 식민주의적 발상과의 공범관계에 대한 자기반성은, 허무나 한계에 대한 패배가 아니라 새로운 출발지점이다.
Abstract
This study is to reexamine experiential and self－examinational critical mind of postcolonialism viewpoint raised in Korean drama among florid rhetoric of multiculturalism and interculturalism, and review scene criticism and debate of academic world of drama field. Ultimately, this work is examination on critical positioning of critic in drama research and criticism. In the field of drama, postcolonialism discussion had close connection with critique on imperialistic character of the world’s drama which is progressed under the pretense of interculturalism. It is to criticize that this is only a fantasy in the end, and representation of us and 3rd world from the West’s viewpoint. Thus, some postcolonialism dramas try positioning viewing themselves from circumference based on the condition of alterity. In the end, the issue is self－examinational introspection on concrete context such as the position of knowledge production produced by them, its process, possible intervention of power, etc. This is the same for postcolonialism theatre critic. However, some critics who are reflecting that the effort to apply postcolonialism theatre citric is also being subordinating to the West’s colony knowledge show effort of postcolinializing their thought itself. Here, the desire towards postcolonialsim occasionally results in the return to nationalism. However, this also has its origin in the fantasy of determination in national identity or is a subordinate attitude observing the center. This is the point where reading of Korean drama should take precautions against most under postcolonialsim circumstance. Subjugation of such a dilemma and awareness on postcolonialism critical position are the possibilities to be freed from politics of rule and obedience, and the methods to deny bisectional extremes and reproduce ourselves through new language. Critics must acknowledge that it is difficult for all issues represses in various ways cannot be divined under the cultural obedient condition. And such awareness, in other words, one’s own critical work, which is self－reflection on complicity with colonial idea that could be executed unconsciously, is not a defeat to nihility or limitation but the starting point.
