한국연극의 정체성 재고(再考)

본고는 전통과 근대의 대립 간에 있던 한국연극의 정체성을 새롭게 정의하여, 그 가능한 합일점을 찾고자 한다. 즉 지금까지 전통극과 근대극을 양분하여 논의하던 한국연극을 하나의 정체성으로 묶어보려는 시도이다. 여태까지의 한국연극의 정체성은 결국 전통연극의 정체성과 근대연극으로 대표되는 정체성의 연계가 어렵다는 것이 가장 큰 문제이다. 그런데 포스트모더니즘의 수용과 함께 현대극에 점점 전통연희의 활용이 눈에 뜨이게 늘어났다. 재현의 형식에 더 이상 연연하지 않는 오늘의 연극은, 전통연희에서 오히려 음악과 무용 등의 혼성체나 연기의 수행성 혹은 자기 지시성 등등을 주목했으며, 민속 연희의 대중성을 전수하고자 했다. 그러하기에 전통은 현대극의 다원적 소스로 활용되며 현재에 되살아나고, 현대극을 다변화시키고 있다. 근년의 국제 사회에서 인정받은 세계화된 공연은 모두 전통을 어떤 의미에서든지 근대극에 접목시킨 공연들이었다. 이는 전통과 근대의 대립되는 두 개의 정체성이 만나서 가능한 하나의 정체성을 이루었기 때문이다. 그리고 이 새 정체성을 향하여 이미 한국연극은 첫발을 내딛고 있으니, 이는 곧 근대극성을 극복한 미래 연극의 정체성이다.
Abstract
This study intends to redefine the identity of Korean theater amid the conflict between tradition and modernity and to find a possible point of unity. Recently, the utilization of traditional entertainments in modern dramas have increased noticeably. The uses of traditions go beyond than simply borrowing through reinterpretation or recontextualization of traditions. Therefore, tradition is used as pluralistic sources for contemporary theatre and is being revived and diversified. All globalized performances, recognized by the international community, are performances that combined tradition with modern theater in some ways. The more we step into the international theatre world, the more important it is to utilize tradition in order to have Korean’s own unique color. Since Korean theatre has already taken its first steps toward this new identity, it is the theatrical identity of the future that will soon overcome the severed identity between the theatres of tradition and modern.
