A Study on the Diversity of Interpretations in Novel Education

The present study proposed a novel education method by which learners can be active in interpreting novels while basing the interpretation on the texts. For this, we need to get out of the traditional view of texts, which regards the text of a novel as an organically unified whole. This study demonstrated that inner cracks existing in Mujeong can be interpreted in different ways by the learners. Mujeong is an enlightening novel showing the growth of enlightening subjects, and at the same time it has the aspect of a love story based on a love triangle, in which a man wanders between two women. When we concentrate on the tension between the two, the novel can be interpreted in various ways. However, contemporary literature textbooks fix Mujeong on the horizon of enlightenment. We need to select texts and suggest activities with which students can understand the characteristics of Mujeong as a love story so that the learners can interpret the novel from different angles based on the texts of the novel. As demonstrated using Mujeong as an example, the method of reading that explores cracks inherent in novel texts can integrate close reading suggested by new criticism and text reading emphasizing readers’ subjectivity. It is wrong to think that close reading of texts is opposed to learnerorientedness. We should pursue the diversity of interpretations while respecting the interpreters’ subjectivity as well as the inner characteristics of texts.
